Coastal Climbing Centre, in partnership with Scouts Canada, is able to offer Vertical Skills competency courses and badges up to and including level 4.
Our qualified instructors have years of experience working with kids of all age groups including beavers, cubs, scouts, venturers, and even rovers to provide a complete learning experience for those wanting to experience a little bit of the rock climbing world.

Vertical Skills – Level 1 & 2
Skills learned:
- Safety rules for climbing on an artificial wall
- Safety rules for being at the top of or the bottom of a cliff face
- Helmet safety rules – Why? When? How?
- Parts of a carabiner
Price: $18 + GST per person (1.5 hours)
Vertical Skills – Level 3
Skills learned:
- Tying a figure-8 follow-through knot
- Caring for and handling of climbing rope and equipment
- Leave No Trace
- Climbing to the top of an artificial climbing wall
- Putting on and adjusting a climbing harness
- Types of climbing – single/multi-pitch, lead climbing, etc.
Price: $18 + GST per person (1.5 or 2 hours)
Vertical Skills – Level 4
Skills learned:
- Tying a climbing rope onto a harness
- Safety rules for climbing at an outdoor site
- Safety checks of belay system and equipment
- Communication between climber and belayer
- Coiling a climbing rope
- Belaying with an auto-locking belay device
- Types of locking and non-locking carabiners
Price: $60 + GST per person (2 hours; minimum of 2 people)
SCOUTS, GUIDES, & CADETS – RECREATION
For those who are looking to simply come in and recreate, we offer an instructor-led session aimed at exactly that – having a blast with a focus on safety and positivity. This program is available to all scout, guide, and cadet groups.
Price: $16.95 + GST per person (2 hours)

Q: What start times are available?
A: Start times are available Monday to Friday from 6:30pm onwards. Alternate times are available upon request.
Q: What footwear is recommended?
A: Running shoes are recommended; however, climbing shoes are available for rent.
Q: Is a deposit required?
A: No, a deposit is not required.
Q: Does each climber need a signed waiver to participate?
A: Due to our indemnification agreement with Scouts Canada, waivers for scouters are not required. Waivers for cadets and guides, however, are still required to participate. A parent or legal guardian must sign the waiver for each participant under the age of 16.
